RED RIDING HOOD GARDEN PHLOX
Phlox paniculata 'Red Riding Hood' is a stunning mid-sized perennial that lives up to its name with exceptionally bright, cherry-red flower clusters. It is highly sought after for its intense, saturated color that remains vibrant red even under the hot summer sun, avoiding the fading common in some other red cultivars. It maintains a very sturdy, upright habit with thick, dark green foliage that provides a lush, professional-looking backdrop for the brilliant blooms. Reaching a manageable height, it is a versatile choice for the middle of a perennial border where it can provide a powerful, high-energy focal point without overshadowing smaller companion plants.
To ensure 'Red Riding Hood' reaches its full potential, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun to encourage the most prolific flowering and maintain its compact structure. It thrives in rich, organic soil that is consistently moist but well-drained, so regular watering is key during dry spells to prevent the lower leaves from dropping. While 'Red Riding Hood' is known for its vigor, providing excellent air circulation and watering at the soil level will help protect its deep green leaves from powdery mildew. Applying a layer of mulch will help regulate soil temperature and moisture, and deadheading the spent red blooms will keep the plant looking tidy while potentially prompting a lighter second flush of flowers later in the season.
