DAVID GARDEN PHLOX
Phlox paniculata 'David' is arguably the most famous white-flowering garden phlox, honored as the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2002 for its exceptional performance. It is renowned for its large, dense, pyramidal clusters of pure white flowers that emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance from midsummer through early autumn. Reaching a height of 36-42 inches on sturdy, upright stems that rarely require staking, it serves as a luminous focal point in the back or middle of a border, particularly in "moon gardens" where its blossoms seem to glow at dusk.
To keep 'David' Phlox looking its best, choose a spot in full sun to very light dappled shade with rich, moist, and well-drained soil. It is celebrated for its high resistance to powdery mildew, but it still thrives best with excellent air circulation; spacing plants about 2 feet apart and avoiding overhead watering will help maintain its healthy, deep green foliage. Regular maintenance includes providing a layer of summer mulch to keep the roots cool and deadheading spent flower panicles to encourage potential reblooming. In fall, cut the stems back to the ground to ensure a clean start for the following spring.
