RUSSIAN SAGE

Perovskia atriplicifolia, commonly known as Russian Sage, is a staple of the water-wise garden, prized for its airy, ethereal appearance and long-lasting color. This sub-shrubby perennial features upright, silvery-white woody stems clothed in deeply lobed, aromatic grey-green leaves that release a pleasant herbal scent when brushed. From mid-summer through early autumn, the plant is enveloped in a hazy cloud of tiny, tubular lavender-blue flowers held in fuzzy purple calyxes, creating a soft "blur" of cool color that serves as a premier nectar station for honeybees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

Reaching a stately height of 3 to 4 feet with a similarly wide, arching spread, the straight species is best suited for the back of a sunny border or massed in large landscapes where its sprawling habit can be fully appreciated. It is a "bulletproof" plant for USDA zones 4-9, boasting legendary heat, drought, and salt tolerance once established. Because it thrives in lean, sharply drained soil and requires virtually no supplemental water, it is an ideal candidate for xeriscaping or coastal gardens. Its pungent oils make it exceptionally deer and rabbit resistant, ensuring its lacy, architectural silhouette remains intact throughout the season.
