RED RIDING HOOD BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon 'Red Riding Hood' is a high-performance perennial celebrated for its intense, saturated cherry-red flowers and exceptionally long blooming window. These tubular, trumpet-shaped blooms feature white-streaked throats and are held on sturdy, upright stems that rise above a dense mound of narrow, forest-green foliage. Reaching a tidy height of 18 to 24 inches, it offers a much more "prolific" flowering display than older varieties, often blooming in heavy waves from late spring through late summer, acting as a premier nectar source for hummingbirds and bees.
'Red Riding Hood' is cold hardy (USDA zones 5-9) and is prized for its ability to maintain a neat, upright form without flopping, even after summer storms. Like other members of the Riding Hood series, it thrives in full sun and requires lean, sharply drained soil; it is highly drought tolerant once established and is notably resistant to deer and rabbits. Because of its compact size and high-impact color, it is an ideal choice for the front of sunny borders, rock gardens, or high-performance patio containers where a constant "splash" of red is needed.
