MIDNIGHT MASQUERADE BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon 'Midnight Masquerade' is a sophisticated, dark-foliage perennial that brings deep, atmospheric color to the garden from spring through fall. It is widely considered an improvement over older purple-leaved varieties, featuring rich burgundy-to-charcoal purple foliage that holds its dark intensity even in the high heat of summer. In early to mid-summer, sturdy dark stems rise to a height of 36 to 42 inches, topped with large, airy panicles of tubular, lavender-purple flowers with pure white throats. This elegant "tone-on-tone" purple effect is a magnetic draw for hummingbirds and bees, providing a stately, upright architectural element to the middle of the border.
Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, 'Midnight Masquerade' is a rugged and adaptable performer that thrives in full sun; the more sunlight it receives, the darker and more "ebony" its foliage will appear. It is exceptionally drought tolerant once established and maintains a refined, refined habit that does not flop or require staking, even in leaner soils.
