Zone: 3DARK TOWERS BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon 'Dark Towers' is a dramatic, structural perennial prized for its moody, wine-red to purple-black foliage that maintains its deep intensity even in the heat of summer. In late spring to early summer, sturdy dark stems rise to a height of 36 to 42 inches, topped with airy clusters of tubular, pale pink flowers with white throats. This "pink-on-purple" color scheme makes it a magnet for hummingbirds and bees, while its upright habit adds a sophisticated, architectural verticality to the middle of a sunny garden border.
Derived from the famous 'Husker Red', 'Dark Towers' offers superior foliage color and better resistance to powdery mildew. It is a rugged, cold-hardy perennial (USDA zones 3-8) that thrives in full sun; in fact, the more sun it receives, the darker its foliage becomes. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and performs best in lean, well-drained soil. Unlike some other penstemons, 'Dark Towers' is notably long-lived and remains a tidy, upright mound that does not require staking, making it an ideal low-maintenance choice for high-impact color.
