DARK AMETHYST BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon 'Dark Amethyst' (Beardtongue) is part of the Bejeweled® series and is a prized perennial celebrated for its deep, jewel-toned blossoms and dark, dramatic foliage that adds refined contrast to garden borders. Rising on sturdy, upright stems, it produces clusters of tubular, dark violet-purple flowers with white-throated interiors from late spring well into midsummer. The blossoms sit atop rich, lance-shaped leaves that often emerge with dark bronze or burgundy undertones, maintaining a neat, mounded form that attracts hummingbirds, bees, and other beneficial pollinators. Its long bloom window, upright architectural form, and exceptional resistance to browsing deer and rabbits make it a standout structural choice for both formal gardens and naturalized prairie landscapes.
To thrive, Penstemon 'Dark Amethyst' requires a spot in full sun, receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure strong stem rigidity and optimal flower production. The single most critical factor for its long-term survival is sharply draining soil; it relies on lean to average soils with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and will quickly suffer from root rot in heavy, poorly drained clay or overly wet winter conditions. Once established, it exhibits impressive drought tolerance and requires minimal supplemental water.
