PRINCE FOUNTAINGRASS

Pennisetum 'Prince' is a striking ornamental grass that commands attention with its dramatic, deep purple-to-black foliage, which maintains its intense color throughout the growing season. Unlike many other fountain grasses, 'Prince' features thick, broad leaves that create a bold, upright, and architectural silhouette. As the season progresses, it produces large, dark burgundy-to-black flower spikes that rise above the foliage, adding texture and movement to the landscape.

Pennisetum 'Prince' thrives in full sun. It thrives in well-draining soil and appreciates consistent moisture during the heat of summer, though it is reasonably tolerant once established. While it is a vigorous grower, you should provide it with plenty of room to spread, as its substantial mass can crowd out smaller neighbors. It is treated as an annual here in Ohio as its USDA hardiness zones are 9-10.

Planting Tips

To help Pennisetum 'Prince' settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. This variety is an exotic, tender grass that is not reliably hardy in the Midwest; it is best treated as an annual or overwintered in a protected location. It is prized for its dramatic, vibrant color and soft, bottlebrush-like plumes that provide significant textural interest throughout the summer and fall. It performs best with consistent moisture and excellent drainage.
