PIGLET FOUNTAIN GRASS

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Piglet', often simply called Piglet Fountain Grass, is an attractive and perfectly sized ornamental grass that offers a charming alternative to its larger and smaller relatives. Its name, "Piglet," hints at its endearing and compact nature, making it a fantastic choice for a wide range of garden applications.

'Piglet' is the "Goldilocks" of fountain grasses-taller than the diminutive 'Little Bunny' and more compact than the popular 'Hameln'. This makes it an ideal fit for smaller gardens, urban landscapes, and tight spaces where other grasses might be too large. In late summer, 'Piglet' sends up a profusion of soft, bottlebrush-like flower plumes. The plumes are typically a creamy white or light tan, creating a delicate, ethereal effect. They rise gracefully above the foliage, adding a wonderful sense of movement and texture to the landscape.

Pennisetum 'Piglet' is ideal for containers, edging, borders and rock gardens. Its deep green, arching foliage is lush in summer, turning golden-yellow in fall with fluffy seed heads proving ongoing winter interest.

It is a warm-season grass that is exceptionally low-maintenance. It is deer-resistant and drought tolerant once established, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. Minimal care is needed-simply cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

Planting Tips

To help Pennisetum settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. This variety is a hardy, reliable perennial that will return year after year in our region. It is prized for its graceful, arching foliage and soft, bottlebrush-like plumes that provide significant textural interest from summer into autumn. It performs best with consistent moisture and excellent drainage. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth for the new season.
