DREAM CATCHER® SMOKY ROSE® SWITCH GRASS

Panicum Smoky Rose® is a refined selection of native switchgrass that brings an elegant, airy texture and sophisticated color palette to the landscape. This ornamental grass is celebrated for its sturdy, upright habit and its striking transition from deep green summer foliage to a beautiful smoky-rose hue as it matures. By late summer, it is topped with delicate, cloud-like panicles of pink-tinted flowers that hover above the blades, creating a shimmering effect in the breeze. As fall approaches, the entire plant takes on rich burgundy and bronze tones, providing exceptional late-season interest and a sturdy architectural presence that persists even through the winter months.

The ideal spot for Smoky Rose® is a location in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its upright form and achieving the most intense rose-colored pigments in the foliage. It is highly adaptable to a wide range of conditions, thriving in average to moist, well-drained soil, but it is also remarkably tolerant of heavy clay, occasional flooding, and drought once established. Typically hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, it is a low-maintenance choice that provides excellent cover for songbirds.

Planting Tips

To help Panicum virgatum types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. It is incredibly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions, including heavy clay and periodic wetness, and it becomes quite drought-tolerant once its extensive root system is established. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients can cause the stems to become weak and prone to flopping. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to prepare for a fresh season of growth.
