SMOKING GUN SWITCH GRASS

Panicum virgatum 'Smoking Gun' is a standout switchgrass prized for its steel-blue summer foliage and upright, non-flopping habit. Reaching mature heights of 3 to 4 feet, its clean architectural silhouette provides vertical interest in mixed borders, native meadows, and modern landscape designs. In late summer, airy panicles of delicate, hazy flower seed heads rise above the metallic blue blades, creating movement and soft texture in the garden. As fall temperatures drop, its foliage undergoes a dramatic color shift, transitioning from rich smoky blue to brilliant shades of copper, tan, and warm amber that persist straight through the winter months.

'Smoking Gun' Switch Grass thrives in full sun, receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure the tightest upright habit and richest foliage coloration. It is exceptionally adaptable to a wide array of soil conditions, handling everything from dry, sandy soils to heavy clay, provided drainage is reasonable. Ideal spots would be ponds, streams and water feature borders as it serves as a naturalized, mid-height visual buffer along water banks where it stabilizes the shoreline.

Planting Tips

To help Panicum virgatum types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. It is incredibly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions, including heavy clay and periodic wetness, and it becomes quite drought-tolerant once its extensive root system is established. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients can cause the stems to become weak and prone to flopping. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to prepare for a fresh season of growth.
