PRAIRIE WINDS® BLUE SPEAR SWITCH GRASS

Panicum virgatum 'Blue Spear' is a distinctive architectural cultivar of native North American switchgrass bred for its exceptionally narrow, columnar habit and intense glaucous coloration. Unlike wider-spreading native selections, 'Blue Spear' forms a tightly tufted, vertical clump rising 4 to 5 feet tall while maintaining a remarkably narrow spread of just 2 to 3 feet. Its stiff, linear leaf blades exhibit a striking steel-blue to metallic glaucous-blue cast throughout the spring and summer months. In August and September, the culms top out with airy, cloud-like panicles of tiny purple-tinted spikelets that hover just above the foliage canopy. As fall progresses, the blue foliage shifts to a warm golden hue while the persistent seed heads provide structural winter texture and valuable forage for songbirds.

Panicum virgatum 'Blue Spear' is an exceptionally tough, warm-season perennial grass with outstanding drought tolerance and soil adaptability. It thrives in full sun exposure and accepts a wide range of soils, from heavy, compacted clay to lean, sandy soils across pH 5.5 to 7.5. Rich soils or excessive nitrogen fertilization should be strictly avoided, as over-nourishment causes the slender stems to stretch flop. As a warm-season grass, it remains dormant until soil temperatures warm in late spring.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help Panicum virgatum types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. It is incredibly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions, including heavy clay and periodic wetness, and it becomes quite drought-tolerant once its extensive root system is established. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients can cause the stems to become weak and prone to flopping. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to prepare for a fresh season of growth.
