WHITE TREE PEONY
Paeonia suffruticosa 'White' is a magnificent tree peony that brings a sense of serenity and "angelic" beauty to the spring garden. This woody shrub produces enormous, dinner-plate-sized blooms that can reach up to 10 inches in diameter, featuring layer upon layer of silky, pure white petals. At the center, a dense cluster of golden-yellow stamens provides a striking contrast, and the flowers are often noted for their subtle, sweet perfume. Unlike herbaceous peonies, this variety develops a permanent woody framework that stays above ground year-round, eventually maturing into a structural shrub 3 to 5 feet tall.
To ensure White tree peony thrives, it should be planted in dappled shade or morning sun, as protection from the harsh afternoon heat helps preserve the delicate white petals and extends the bloom life. It requires deep, fertile, and exceptionally well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; it is highly intolerant of "wet feet," which can quickly lead to root rot. Because tree peonies are slow to establish, often taking three years to reach their full flowering potential, they should be placed in a permanent location and left undisturbed. Maintenance is minimal, as the plant does not require routine pruning, simply remove any dead wood in early spring to keep the shrub healthy and well-shaped.
