RED TREE PEONY
Paeonia suffruticosa 'Red' is a breathtaking tree peony that serves as a focal point in the spring garden, known for its massive, 8-to-10-inch blossoms in shades of scarlet, ruby, or deep crimson. Unlike herbaceous peonies, this is a deciduous woody shrub that maintains a permanent structure throughout the winter, eventually reaching a height of 3 to 5 feet. The flowers are typically semi-double with a silk-like texture, surrounding a crown of golden-yellow stamens, and are celebrated for their rich, spicy fragrance that is often more pronounced than that of its pink or purple counterparts.
To thrive, 'Red' tree peony requires deep, fertile, and well-drained soil, as it is highly sensitive to "wet feet" and root rot. It performs best in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, which prevents the intense red pigments in the petals from fading or wilting in the heat. Once mature, these "heirloom" shrubs are incredibly long-lived, often surviving for over 50 years, and require very little maintenance beyond the removal of dead wood in early spring.
