Zone: 5PURPLE TREE PEONY
Paeonia suffruticosa 'Purple' is a majestic tree peony known for its dramatic, large-scale blooms and permanent woody structure. Unlike herbaceous peonies, it does not die back to the ground in winter; instead, it forms a deciduous shrub that can reach 3 to 5 feet in height and width. In mid-to-late spring, it produces massive, 6 to 10-inch flowers in shades of royal purple to violet-red, often featuring a "crinkled" silk-like texture and a prominent central boss of golden-yellow stamens. These blooms are typically semi-double and carry a light, pleasant fragrance that adds a sophisticated sensory layer to the garden.
'Purple' tree peony thrives in partial shade - ideally with morning sun and protection from the harsh afternoon heat to prevent its delicate petals from fading or wilting. It requires deep, fertile, and exceptionally well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; "wet feet" is the most common cause of failure for tree peonies. Once established, it is remarkably long-lived, often thriving for 50 years or more, and should be left undisturbed as it possesses deep roots that make transplanting difficult.
