Paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt' is the undisputed "Queen" of the peony world, an award-winning heirloom introduced in 1906 that remains the most famous pink variety today. This late-season bloomer produces massive, fully double blossoms that can reach a spectacular 8 inches across, featuring layers of soft, apple-blossom pink petals with delicate silver edges and occasional raspberry-red flecks at the center. Known for its intense, sweet floral fragrance, it is the gold standard for cut flowers and is a staple in high-end wedding bouquets and spring arrangements.
Standing about 3 feet tall, 'Sarah Bernhardt' forms a lush, rounded mound of glossy green foliage that provides structure in the garden through the summer. Because its massive "bomb-style" blooms are incredibly heavy, especially when wet, the stems absolutely require staking or sturdy peony hoops to prevent them from bowing to the ground. For the best results, plant in full sun and rich, well-drained soil, ensuring the "eyes" (buds) are buried no deeper than 1 to 2 inches to guarantee the plant has enough winter chill to produce its legendary flowers.
