Zone: 6HELENE MARTIN PEONY
Paeonia 'Helene Martin' is an exquisite Lutea Hybrid Tree Peony (a cross between P. potaninii var. trollioides and the Japanese variety 'Gessekai') that stands out for its ethereal, pearlescent beauty. It produces exceptionally large, single to semi-double flowers that open a soft, pale cream with a delicate pink blush, often described as having an iridescent "Mother of Pearl" sheen. The heart of the bloom is dramatically marked by small, wine-red or carmine basal flares and a cluster of purple filaments topped with golden-yellow anthers, creating a sophisticated and refined color palette.
Unlike many woody peonies, 'Helene Martin' Peony forms a relatively compact, multi-stemmed shrub reaching about 3 to 4 feet in height and width. It is particularly noted for its ornamental, finely dissected foliage that emerges with a striking red or bronze tint in the spring before maturing to a lush green. While it is a vigorous grower, it remains manageable and sturdy, with woody stems that hold the massive 8-to-9-inch blossoms upright. This variety also offers a moderate lemon fragrance, adding a sensory layer to its visual charm in the late spring garden.
