BOWL OF BEAUTY JAPANESE PEONY
Paeonia 'Bowl of Beauty' is one of the most beloved Japanese-form herbaceous peonies, famous for its striking color contrast and massive, saucer-like blooms. This mid-season powerhouse features enormous, cup-shaped outer petals in a luminous shade of rose-pink that can reach up to 8 to 10 inches across. At the center sits a dense, frothy "bowl" of narrow, creamy-white to pale lemon staminodes, creating a bicolored effect that looks like a scoop of vanilla ice cream resting in a bright pink dish. Reaching a height of 24 inches, it emits a light, sweet fragrance and is anchored by a lush mound of deep green, divided foliage that remains an attractive garden staple throughout the summer.
To ensure 'Bowl of Beauty' maintains its vibrant pink-and-cream display, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are required for the best floral production. It thrives in rich, fertile, and well-drained soil; like most peonies, it is a "heavy feeder" that benefits from a top-dressing of compost in early spring as the red shoots first emerge. Because the Japanese-style center is much lighter and holds less water than a full double peony, this variety has notably sturdy stems that resist flopping, though a low peony hoop is still recommended to protect the massive blooms from heavy spring winds.
