Zone: 3ITOH SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS TREE PEONY
Paeonia 'Scrumdidleyumptious' is a truly delectable Itoh Hybrid that lives up to its playful name with some of the most intricate blooms in the intersectional category. This mid-season bloomer produces massive, high-density semi-double to double flowers that open in a unique creamy-yellow, heavily flushed and edged with a delicious rosy-pink. As the flowers mature, the pink tones expand, giving the blossoms a "peaches and cream" appearance that is further enhanced by a light, sweet fragrance. Reaching a height of about 24 to 30 inches, it forms a compact, sturdy mound of lush, emerald-green foliage that stays clean and disease-resistant all summer long.
Like its Itoh cousins, 'Scrumdidleyumptious' Peony is prized for its exceptional stem strength, holding its large, heavy "confection-like" blooms perfectly upright without any need for staking. It thrives in full sun to partial shade in rich, well-drained soil; in particularly hot regions, afternoon shade is highly recommended to prevent the delicate creamy-pink pigments from bleaching out too quickly. It is remarkably cold-hardy and vigorous, combining the exotic floral form of a tree peony with the rugged reliability of an herbaceous type. In late autumn, simply prune the stems back to about 4 to 6 inches above the soil to ensure it returns with even more "scrumptious" blooms the following year.
