DUCHESSE DE NEMOURS PEONY

Paeonia 'Duchesse de Nemours' is a quintessential heirloom herbaceous peony that has remained a garden favorite since its introduction in 1856. This mid-season bloomer is renowned for its large, globe-shaped double flowers that open in a soft, creamy white with a distinct primrose-yellow glow at the center. As the blooms mature, they fade to a pure, snowy white and release an intoxicating, lily-of-the-valley fragrance that is widely considered one of the finest in the peony world. Reaching a height of approximately 24 to 30 inches, it features lush, deep green divided foliage that stays attractive throughout the summer, providing a classic, romantic aesthetic for cottage gardens and formal borders alike.

To ensure this "Duchesse" reigns supreme in your garden, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are necessary for its prolific flowering and strong stems. It thrives in rich, fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral pH; like most peonies, it will struggle in heavy, waterlogged clay which can lead to root issues. When planting, it is crucial to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, as deeper planting is the primary reason peonies fail to bloom.
