CORAL SUNSET PEONY
Paeonia 'Coral Sunset' is a breathtaking, early blooming hybrid that is often considered the "sister" to 'Coral Charm' due to its similar color-shifting magic. This award-winning semi-double peony begins the season with large, deeply cupped blooms in an intense, neon coral-pink that is significantly more vibrant and saturated than other coral varieties. As the flowers mature, they gracefully transition through a sunset-inspired palette of apricot, shell pink, and finally a soft, warm cream. Reaching a height of approximately 30 to 36 inches, it is slightly more compact than 'Coral Charm' and is prized for its exceptionally strong, thick stems that hold the massive, fragrant flowers upright even after a heavy spring rain.
To ensure 'Coral Sunset' reaches its full color potential, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as six to eight hours of direct light are essential for its vigorous growth and prolific blooming. It thrives in rich, fertile, well-drained soil; like all peonies, it will struggle in heavy clay or areas that collect standing water, which can lead to crown rot. When planting, it is vital to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to ensure it flowers reliably in future seasons. While its stems are famously sturdy and often do not require traditional staking, a low peony hoop can still be helpful in open, windy areas to protect the large, waxy blossoms.
