Zone: 3CANDY STRIPE PEONY
Paeonia 'Candy Stripe' is a whimsical and eye-catching herbaceous peony renowned for its large, bi-colored double blooms that look like they have been hand-painted. Each creamy-white to soft-pink petal is vividly streaked and mottled with irregular stripes of deep raspberry-red, making every individual flower unique. This late-midseason bloomer produces a light, sweet fragrance and reaches a height of approximately 30 to 36 inches. Its lush, dark green foliage provides a dense, bushy backdrop that remains attractive throughout the summer, making it a conversation piece in any perennial border or cutting garden.
To showcase its stunning variegation and ensure strong growth, 'Candy Stripe' should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are needed for the best color contrast. It thrives in rich, fertile, and well-drained soil; like all peonies, it is a "heavy feeder" that benefits from a bit of compost or a balanced fertilizer applied in early spring as new shoots emerge. When planting, it is crucial to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, as deeper planting will result in lush foliage but no flowers. Because the large, multi-petaled blooms can become heavy, especially after a spring rain, providing a sturdy peony hoop or decorative stake early in the season is highly recommended to keep the striped flowers upright and visible.
