BUCKEYE BELLE PEONY

Paeonia 'Buckeye Belle' is a dramatic and highly sought-after semi-double herbaceous peony, famous for its intense, deep mahogany-red color that leans toward a chocolate-maroon. The flowers are composed of several rows of large, velvety petals that cup a central cluster of bright golden-yellow stamens, creating a stunning visual contrast that "glows" in the garden. This early-season bloomer is particularly prized for its strong, upright stems and compact habit, typically reaching a height of 30 to 36 inches. Its glossy, dark green foliage remains attractive throughout the summer, often taking on beautiful reddish-bronze tints in the autumn, making it a multi-season asset for any border.

To achieve the most vibrant color and strongest stems, 'Buckeye Belle' should be planted in a location that receives full sun, though it can tolerate a very small amount of afternoon shade in warmer regions. It thrives in rich, fertile, and well-drained soil with a neutral pH, and it is essential to plant the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to ensure it flowers properly in subsequent years. Because it has naturally sturdier stems than many older peony varieties, it often requires less staking, though a low hoop can still be helpful to protect the heavy blooms from wind and rain.
