BIG BEN PEONY

Paeonia 'Big Ben' is a magnificent heirloom herbaceous peony prized for its exceptionally large, bomb-style double blooms and commanding garden presence. The flowers are a striking deep fuchsia-red to magenta, featuring a dense center of ruffled petals surrounded by larger, silky guard petals. 'Big Ben' is celebrated for its incredible fragrance, which can perfume an entire garden corner during its mid-season blooming period. Reaching a height of approximately 36 inches, it produces lush, divided green foliage that remains an attractive, bushy backdrop for other perennials long after the spectacular floral display has ended in early summer.

To ensure 'Big Ben' thrives, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, which promotes the strongest stems and the most prolific flowering. It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soil and, like most peonies, is a "heavy feeder" that benefits from an application of compost or balanced fertilizer in early spring. When planting, it is vital to ensure the "eyes" or buds are set no deeper than 2 inches below the soil surface, as deep planting is the most common reason for a lack of blooms. Because of the sheer size and weight of its "Big Ben" flowers, providing a sturdy mechanical support or peony hoop early in the season is essential to prevent the stems from bowing to the ground during spring rains.
