GOLDEN RAGWORT

Packera aurea, commonly known as Golden Ragwort, is a versatile native perennial prized for its ability to brighten shaded garden corners with a carpet of brilliant color. In early to mid-spring, it sends up sturdy, branched stems topped with clusters of cheerful, daisy-like yellow flowers that provide an essential early nectar source for pollinators. Unlike many spring ephemerals that disappear after blooming, Golden Ragwort maintains an attractive groundcover of heart-shaped, deep green basal leaves that often feature a subtle purple tint on their undersides. It is an excellent choice for naturalizing in woodland gardens or serving as a living mulch to suppress weeds in damp areas.

To ensure its success, it should be placed in a spot that receives partial shade to full shade, although it can handle full sun if the soil is kept consistently moist. It thrives in rich, organic soils that stay damp, making it a perfect solution for rain gardens, low spots, or along the edges of ponds. While it is highly adaptable to various soil types, including heavy clay, it will struggle in dry, sandy locations without regular watering. Because it spreads through both seeds and underground runners, it can quickly fill in a designated space, but it is easily managed and generally avoided by deer and rabbits.
