DROPS OF JUPITER OREGANO
Origanum 'Drops of Jupiter' is a stunning ornamental oregano that serves as a high-contrast focal point in the garden, thanks to its brilliant chartreuse-yellow foliage. This hybrid variety grows in a vigorous, mounded habit, reaching approximately 24 to 30 inches in height and spread. In late summer, the golden leaves are topped with a prolific display of mauve-pink flowers held by dark purple calyxes, which remain attractive long after the actual blooms have faded. While its fragrant leaves are technically edible, they possess a much milder flavor than culinary oregano, making this plant more of a "showstopper" for the landscape than a staple for the kitchen.
To keep 'Drops of Jupiter' looking its best, it should be planted in a spot that receives full sun, as the intense light is what keeps the foliage that iconic bright yellow; in too much shade, the leaves will fade to a standard green. It requires well-drained soil and is susceptible to root rot if left in soggy or waterlogged ground, making it an ideal candidate for rock gardens, sandy loams, or raised beds. Once established, this perennial is remarkably drought-tolerant and heat-resistant, requiring very little supplemental water. It is hardy in zones 4 through 9 and is generally avoided by deer and rabbits, though it remains a magnet for bees and butterflies throughout its long blooming season.
