Zone: 5NEPTUNE KUBAN CATMINT
Nepeta kubanica 'Neptune' is a sophisticated departure from the typical sprawling catmint, offering a much more upright and architectural habit. Unlike the fine, hazy foliage of most Nepeta faassenii types, 'Neptune' features larger, textured, deep green leaves that provide a lush backdrop for its striking floral display. Reaching a sturdy height of 12 to 15 inches, it produces oversized, dense spikes of vivid blue flowers that are significantly larger than those of its cousins. 'Neptune' is prized for its ability to stay exceptionally tidy and upright, making it a "cleaner" looking choice for modern landscapes, while still serving as a major nectar source for bees and butterflies throughout the summer.
The ideal spot for 'Neptune' is in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. While most catmints are famously drought-starved, this kubanica hybrid actually appreciates a bit more consistent moisture and slightly cooler conditions than the desert-dwelling varieties, though it still demands excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Its care is remarkably simple: once the first massive flush of blue spikes begins to fade in mid-summer, a quick shearing will stimulate a fresh crop of those handsome green leaves and often trigger a secondary bloom.
