KITTEN AROUND CATMINT
Nepeta faassenii 'Kitten Around' is one of the tightest and most compact Catmints available, specifically developed for tight garden spots and urban landscapes. Reaching a diminutive height of only 12 to 15 inches with a similar spread, it forms an incredibly dense, petite mound of aromatic, silvery-green foliage. Despite its small scale, it is a heavy bloomer, producing tight clusters of periwinkle-blue flowers held by rosy-purple calyxes. This color contrast ensures the plant remains visually interesting even after the primary petals have fallen. Like its larger relatives, it is a high-performance pollinator plant that draws in bees and butterflies while its scented oils naturally repel deer and rabbits.
The ideal spot for 'Kitten Around' is in full sun with well-drained soil, as this variety thrives in hot, dry conditions and can struggle in heavy, wet clay. Because of its ultra-compact habit, it is a perfect candidate for the very front of a perennial border, rocky crevices, or as a low-maintenance filler in decorative patio containers. Care is remarkably simple: once established, it requires very little supplemental water and actually prefers "lean" soil without heavy fertilization. To keep it looking its best, you can lightly shear the plant after the first flush of flowers to stimulate a fresh crop of silver foliage and a potential second wave of blue blooms in late summer.
