Nepeta 'Chartreuse on the Loose' is a vibrant, color-shifting perennial that brings a jolt of high-contrast energy to the garden. Unlike traditional catmints with silvery-green foliage, 'Chartreuse on the Loose' features brilliant chartreuse-yellow leaves that remain bright and sun-fast throughout the entire growing season. Standing at a compact 9 to 12 inches tall with a wider spread, it creates a luminous groundcover effect. In early summer, it is smothered in clusters of lavender-blue flowers that sit perfectly against the neon-yellow backdrop. This striking color combination makes it a favorite for gardeners looking to brighten up darker corners of the landscape or create a "pop" alongside deep purple or burgundy companion plants.
To keep this catmint looking its electric best, its ideal spot is in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. While most catmints crave punishingly hot sun, 'Chartreuse on the Loose' actually appreciates a little afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent its light-colored foliage from scorching. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in average soil, as overly rich fertilizers can cause the stems to become soft and floppy. Care is remarkably low-maintenance: after the initial flush of lavender blooms begins to fade, you can lightly shear the plant back to encourage a fresh crop of bright yellow leaves and a potential second wave of flowers.
