Zone: 6HEAVENLY BAMBOO
Nandina domestica, commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo, is a versatile evergreen shrub prized for its multi-seasonal interest and elegant, cane-like stems. Despite its nickname, it is actually a member of the Barberry family and is not a true bamboo, though its lacy, compound leaves certainly mimic that aesthetic. Heavenly Bamboo offers a shifting palette of color, with new growth emerging in shades of bronze or copper, maturing to a rich green in summer, and finally transforming into vibrant purples and fiery reds during the winter months. In late spring, it produces airy panicles of tiny white flowers that give way to heavy clusters of bright red berries, providing a critical pop of color and texture in the dormant winter landscape.
For the ideal spot, plant Nandina in a location that receives full sun to partial shade; while it is remarkably adaptable to deep shade, the most brilliant fall and winter foliage colors are achieved with more direct sunlight. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, though it is famously tough and can tolerate a variety of soil types, including heavy clay. Once established, Heavenly Bamboo is exceptionally drought-tolerant and requires minimal care beyond occasional deep watering during extreme dry spells.
