WHITE CLOUD MUHLY GRASS

Muhlenbergia capillaris 'White Cloud' is a beautiful ornamental grass that brings a soft, ethereal texture and late-season drama to the landscape. While standard Muhly grass is famous for its bright pinkish-purple haze, this exceptional selection produces massive, billowy clouds of ivory-white to pale cream flower panicles. Starting in late summer and lasting well into autumn, these delicate, feathery seed heads float gracefully above a neat, upright clump of fine-textured, needle-like blue-green foliage. Growing roughly 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, it creates a striking, glowing silhouette when backlit by the autumn sun and adds beautiful, whispering movement to the garden with every passing breeze.

In terms of care, 'White Cloud' Muhly Grass is an incredibly tough, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant plant once its root system is fully established. It is highly adaptable to a wide range of poor soils, handling sandy, rocky, or lean conditions with ease, though it absolutely demands sharp drainage to prevent winter root rot. The ideal spot for this grass is a wide-open location with full, blazing sun, which keeps the narrow blades structurally upright and maximizes the late-season bloom explosion.

Planting Tips

To help Muhlenbergia settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in lean, well-draining soil. They are highly drought-tolerant once established and perform best when kept on the drier side; ensure the planting site has excellent drainage, as they are susceptible to crown rot if allowed to sit in cold, wet soil. In late winter or early spring, cut the foliage back to the ground to refresh the plant for the upcoming season. Maintenance is as simple as it gets: leave the attractive dried tan foliage and seed heads intact through the winter to provide structural landscape interest and shelter for birds, then cut the entire clump back to about 2-3 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring before the fresh new growth begins to emerge.
