PRAIRIE WINDS® CANDY FLOSS MUHLY GRASS

Muhlenbergia capillaris Prairie Winds® 'Candy Floss' is an ornamental grass prized for its soft, airy texture and vibrant fall show. Forming a tidy, upright mound of dark green foliage roughly 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, it transforms dramatically in late summer to early fall when a cloud of wispy, vibrant candy-pink flower plumes emerges above the leaves. 'Candy Floss' offers a reliable, head-turning accent that brings continuous movement and vivid seasonal color to modern landscapes, mass plantings, or mixed perennial borders.

'Candy Floss' requires a location in full sun, needing a minimum of six hours of direct light daily to maintain strong foliage and vivid pink coloration. It thrives in average, well-drained soils and demonstrates excellent adaptability to lean, sandy, or rocky ground, though sharply draining soil is essential to prevent root and crown rot during wet winter months. Once established, 'Candy Floss' exhibits outstanding drought tolerance, impressive heat resistance, and natural resistance to deer and rabbits.

Planting Tips

To help Muhlenbergia settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in lean, well-draining soil. They are highly drought-tolerant once established and perform best when kept on the drier side; ensure the planting site has excellent drainage, as they are susceptible to crown rot if allowed to sit in cold, wet soil. In late winter or early spring, cut the foliage back to the ground to refresh the plant for the upcoming season.
