SUGAR BUZZ® GRAPE GUMBALL BEE BALM
Monarda Grape Gumball is a standout selection from the Sugar Buzz® series, celebrated for its vibrant, violet-purple flowers that resemble shaggy pom-poms. This mid-sized perennial reaches a tidy height of about 18 to 24 inches, forming a lush, well-branched mound that is much more refined than many taller, wilder Bee Balm varieties. Its foliage is a notably dark, glossy green with a spicy, mint-like fragrance that naturally repels deer and rabbits while acting as an irresistible beacon for butterflies and hummingbirds. The intense "grape" hue of the blossoms provides a brilliant pop of cool-toned color that remains saturated and eye-catching from mid-to-late summer.
The ideal spot for 'Grape Gumball' is a location in full sun with rich, organic soil that is consistently moist but well-draining. While this cultivar was specifically bred for its exceptional resistance to powdery mildew, it still thrives best in an open area with good air circulation to keep the lower leaves healthy and green. To maintain its vigorous performance, ensure the plant receives regular watering during dry spells, as drought stress can lead to a ragged appearance and premature dormancy.
