BALMY™ LILAC BEE BALM
Monarda 'Balmy Lilac' is a charming dwarf variety of Bee Balm that packs a vibrant punch into a remarkably compact frame, typically standing only 10 to 12 inches tall. It produces an abundance of shaggy, globular flower heads in a striking shade of lilac-purple that bloom profusely from late spring through summer. Beyond its visual appeal, the plant features dark green, lance-shaped foliage that releases a refreshing minty-basil scent when crushed. Because it is much smaller than traditional Monarda varieties, it is an ideal choice for the front of garden borders or as a colorful filler in patio containers, serving as a high-energy nectar station for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
The ideal spot for 'Balmy Lilac' is a location with full sun to partial shade and rich, organic soil that stays consistently moist but well-drained. While many Bee Balms struggle with powdery mildew, this specific cultivar was bred for exceptional disease resistance, though it still performs best in a spot with good air circulation to keep its foliage pristine. To maintain its health, do not allow the soil to dry out completely during hot summer spells, as drought stress can lead to leaf drop. Regularly deadheading spent blooms will encourage a second flush of flowers and keep the plant looking tidy throughout the growing season.
