SILBERFEDER SILVER GRASS

Miscanthus sinensis 'Silberfeder', famously known as Silver Feather Maiden Grass, is a tall, robust cultivar celebrated for its exceptionally large and shimmering flower plumes. It forms a stately, upright-to-arching clump of wide, deep green blades with a distinct silver midrib, typically reaching 6 to 7 feet tall when in bloom. True to its name, 'Silberfeder' produces massive, feathery, shimmering silver-white plumes earlier in the season than many other Miscanthus varieties (usually by mid-to-late August). These plumes rise high above the foliage like elegant banners, catching the wind and light beautifully, and they hold their shape well into the winter months, providing excellent architectural interest.

Caring for Silver Feather is remarkably easy, provided it has enough "elbow room" to reach its impressive full size. It performs most brilliantly in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its sturdy, upright stems; in too much shade, the heavy plumes may cause the plant to "flop" or lean. Silberfeder is highly drought-tolerant once established and can handle a wide variety of soil types, including heavy clay, as long as it is well-drained. Because it is a deciduous grass, the foliage will turn a warm, almond-tan in late autumn. Maintenance is a once-a-year task: in late winter or very early spring, simply cut the entire clump back to about 6-10 inches from the ground to make way for the bold, new green shoots.
