Zone: 5GRACILLIMUS MAIDEN GRASS
Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus', the classic Maiden Grass, is the gold standard for ornamental grasses and has been a garden favorite for decades. Known for its elegant, "fountain-like" silhouette, it forms a large, rounded clump of exceptionally narrow, deep green blades with a silver midrib. It typically reaches 5-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, creating a sophisticated, fine-textured screen. Unlike other varieties that bloom in mid-summer, 'Gracillimus' is a late bloomer, producing its shimmering, coppery-red plumes in late September or October. These plumes eventually mature into silvery-white tufts that provide iconic winter interest against the snowy landscape.
Caring for 'Gracillimus' is incredibly easy, as it is a long-lived and exceptionally hardy perennial. It performs best in full sun; while it can tolerate light shade, it may lose its beautiful arching form and "flop" without enough light. Gracillimus is highly drought-tolerant once established and is famously adaptable to almost any soil type, including heavy clay and salty coastal air. Maintenance is a simple, once-a-year chore: because it is deciduous, the foliage will turn a beautiful almond-tan in winter. In late winter or very early spring, before the new green shoots emerge, cut the entire clump back to about 6 inches from the ground.
