Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as the Ostrich Fern, is a majestic native fern famous for its large, feathery, lime-green fronds that mimic the shape of ostrich plumes. These fronds emerge from a central crown in a symmetrical, vase-like habit and can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet, creating a lush, tropical atmosphere in temperate landscapes. In late summer, the plant produces distinct, woody, dark brown fertile fronds that stand upright in the center of the clump and persist through the winter, providing unique structural interest long after the green foliage has gone dormant.
Ostrich Fern is a vigorous spreader that naturalizes via underground rhizomes, making it an excellent choice for filling large areas, stabilizing banks, or planting in moist woodland glades. It thrives in partial to full shade and requires consistently moist, rich soil; it is particularly well-suited for boggy areas or the edges of water features. While it is incredibly hardy, it needs protection from heavy winds to keep its tall fronds from snapping, and it may go dormant early in the summer if the soil is allowed to dry out. Give it plenty of room to roam, and it will reward you with a stunning, colonizing display of fine-textured greenery.

Ostrich Ferns thrive in areas where other plants might struggle with too much moisture. Provide a location with partial to full shade. In early spring, clear away dead or damaged fronds to make room for the new spring growth. Mulch well to keep the roots cool and the soil moist.
