BIG LEAF MAGNOLIA

Magnolia macrophylla is more commonly referred to as Big Leaf Magnolia. It is an unusual and rare native Magnolia that features large leaves and fragrant white flowers (with a purple stain at the base) in May and June. It is considered rare throughout its native range, which is mostly in the southeastern United States, and is often found in moist, rich soils on slopes or near ravines.

The most striking feature are its leaves. They are enormous, typically measuring 20-30 inches long and up to 10 inches wide. They are bright, medium green and have a distinctive lobe-like base that helps distinguish them from other large-leaved magnolias.

Following the flowers are attractive, cone-like fruits that are fuzzy and turn pink or rosy-red when mature in late summer. When they split open, they reveal bright red, berry-like seeds that are a favorite food source for birds.

Big Leaf Magnolia thrives in full sun to part shade in nutrient-rich, loamy, evenly moist, well-drained soil.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
