Zone: 3MORDENS PINK LOOSESTRIFE
Lythrum salicaria 'Morden Pink' is a robust, clump-forming perennial prized for its striking vertical architecture and long-lasting summer color. Reaching heights of up to 4 feet, it produces dense, upright spikes of vivid, star-shaped pink flowers that create a glowing effect when caught in the sunlight. Unlike the wild species, 'Morden Pink' was originally bred in Manitoba to be sterile, though it remains a powerful magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Its narrow, willow-like foliage provides a fine-textured backdrop, making it an excellent choice for adding height and structure to the middle or back of a garden border.
The ideal spot for 'Morden Pink' is a location with full sun and consistently moist soil, as it naturally thrives in damp environments like bog gardens, rain gardens, or pond margins. While it is remarkably adaptable and can tolerate average garden soil, it should never be allowed to dry out completely, or the lower leaves may yellow and drop. To maintain its health, deadhead the spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a potential second flush of blooms and prevent any unintended seed set. In late winter or early spring, simply cut the dead woody stems back to the ground to make way for fresh, vigorous new growth.
