Zone: 6VULCAN RED CARDINAL FLOWER
The Lobelia speciosa 'Vulcan Red' is a highly popular Cardinal Flower hybrid, known for its deep, rich coloration and robust growth habit. It forms tall, dense spikes of fiery, cardinal-red, tubular flowers that bloom profusely from mid-summer into the fall. Its foliage is equally dramatic, featuring deep purple-green or bronze-tinted leaves that create a striking contrast with the blooms. With a compact, well-branched, and upright form, 'Vulcan Red' typically reaches a height of 24–30 inches, making it an excellent source of vertical color and a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies.
'Vulcan Red' is a moisture-loving plant that performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires rich, medium to wet soils to thrive (hardy in zones 6-10). It is perfectly suited for consistently damp locations such as the edges of ponds, streams, or in rain gardens, as it tolerates wet feet and even brief flooding. While it can handle full sun in cooler climates, a little afternoon shade is appreciated in hot, dry summers to prevent stress and maintain soil moisture. It is generally low-maintenance, deer and rabbit resistant, and should have its old foliage cut back in early spring for a fresh start.
