Lobelia 'Scarlet Bronze Leaf' (part of the Starship™ series) is a dramatic hybrid Cardinal Flower prized for its intense color contrast and upright, bushy habit. It features spectacular, towering spikes of brilliant scarlet-red, tubular flowers that rise above a striking clump of foliage from mid-summer into early fall. The leaves are the main differentiator for 'Scarlet Bronze Leaf', emerging a rich burgundy and maturing to an attractive coppery-bronze-green, which perfectly complements the fiery blooms. Reaching about 18-24 inches tall, it is a powerful magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies and is well-suited for borders, mass plantings, or container gardens.
Lobelia 'Scarlet Bronze Leaf' requires rich, medium-to-wet soil and thrives in boggy or damp locations; the soil must be kept consistently moist and should never be allowed to dry out. It performs best in full sun to part shade. In northern climates or when planted in consistently moist soil, full sun is ideal, but in hot, drier climates, it appreciates some afternoon shade. It is an easy-care plant that benefits from a protective winter mulch in colder zones and is typically deer and rabbit resistant. Deadheading spent flower spikes will enhance its appearance and may encourage additional blooms.
