SUMMER SCARLET® LA HYBRID LILY

The Lilium LA Summer Scarlet® is a vibrant and compact LA Hybrid lily, a successful cross between the tall Longiflorum (Easter) lily and the colorful Asiatic lily, resulting in a lily that combines the best traits of both. Summer Scarlet® is celebrated for its deep, rich clear red or scarlet color, offering a dramatic splash of color to the garden in summer. The blooms are typically large, showy, upward-facing, and boast the thicker, more weather-resistant petals inherited from its Longiflorum lineage. As a genetically dwarf cultivar, Summer Scarlet® is perfect for smaller spaces, reaching a modest height of 18 to 20 inches (though other LA varieties can be taller), making it an ideal choice for containers, garden borders, and as a low-maintenance, slightly fragrant cut flower.

Summer Scarlet® lily thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 4–9 and should be planted in full sun or a location with morning sun and afternoon shade. The key to successful growth is ensuring the soil is fertile, humus-rich, and above all, very well-drained - lilies will quickly rot in standing water. Like all lilies, it is crucial to allow the foliage to remain on the stem after blooming, only cutting it back when it has completely yellowed and died down in the fall. This process of photosynthesis is vital for storing energy in the bulb, guaranteeing the stunning, vibrant red display returns reliably the following summer.

Asiatic Lily
Asiatic Lilies are native to several areas of Asia. They are easy to care for and the earliest to bloom in the Lily family. Asiatics are fragrance free and come in so many vibrant colors - some even have double blooms! They thrive in all types of soil as long as it is well-drained (add some sand for drainage). These lilies multiply quickly and their bulbs can double every season.

LA Hybrid Lily
L.A. Hybrid Lilies were introduce back in 1992 and are a cross between longiflorum lilies (Easter Lily) and Asiatic hybrids. They get their trumpet shape and longer vase life from the longiflorum, and their warmer flower colors and upward-facing habit from the Asiatic. They have strong, sturdy stems for cutting and are perfect in containers, beds and borders.

Oriental Lily
Oriental Lilies are native to Japan. They are late bloomers - blooming when Asiatic lilies start to fade. They grow considerably taller than Asiatics and are perfect for cut flowers due to their thick, strong stems and heavily fragrance. Yes - they are very fragrant! Their leaves are wider and grows more heart-shaped and their flowers are star-shaped. Their bulbs multiply slower than Asiatic lilies and thrive in well-drained, organic soil.
