Lavandula x intermedia 'Sensational' (Sensational! Lavender) is a next-generation Lavandin hybrid, widely acclaimed as an improved descendant of the popular 'Phenomenal', offering a superior combination of resilience and ornamental traits across a wide range of climates. It is particularly distinguished by its exceptionally large, dense, deep purple flower spikes held on stout, upright stems, which rise above broad, highly aromatic, silver-white foliage. 'Sensational' inherits its parents' famous toughness, demonstrating excellent cold hardiness down to USDA Zone 5, while exhibiting robust tolerance for the challenging heat and humidity in hotter climates, making it a reliable performer where other lavenders fail. It forms a dense, mounded habit, growing to a slightly more compact size than its predecessor, typically reaching 24-30 inches tall with a spread of 18-24 inches.
As with all lavenders, 'Sensational' requires full sun with perfectly well-drained, lean soil, as soggy winter or summer conditions are the primary cause of decline. Once its root system is established, it is highly drought-tolerant and needs minimal supplemental watering. The large, showy blooms appear from mid-summer to early fall and are superb for cutting, featuring a sweet, classic floral fragrance with low camphor content, making them ideal for culinary and aromatherapy uses.
