PROVENCE LAVANDIN LAVENDER

Lavandula x intermedia 'Provence' (Provence Lavender) is a classic and widely cultivated Lavandin hybrid, highly prized for its exceptionally potent, sweet fragrance and long, elegant flower stems, making it a favorite for essential oils, dried bundles, and culinary use. This large, semi-woody perennial grows into an upright, mounded shrub, typically reaching 36-42 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide, adorned with silvery-gray-green foliage. It produces an abundant display of mauve-purple flower spikes from mid-summer to early fall and is notably tolerant of hot, dry conditions, though it requires meticulous soil management. While a French hybrid, 'Provence' is not a true French Lavender (L. dentata) but rather a robust, cold-hardy Lavandin (USDA Zones 5-9) that handles more humidity than many of its counterparts.

'Provence' Lavender requires full sun and perfectly well-drained, alkaline, poor-quality soil, as soggy roots will quickly lead to root rot. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly.

Planting Tips

Prune after blooming to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
