BLUE RABBIT LARCH

Larix kaempferi 'Blue Rabbit' is an exceptional deciduous conifer known for its striking upright, columnar habit and some of the most vibrant blue foliage in the species. Unlike most evergreens, this Japanese Larch sheds its needles annually, but not before putting on a dramatic autumn show where the soft, glaucous-blue needles transform into a brilliant golden-orange. Its growth is relatively fast, typically reaching about 25 feet in height but staying a slim 6 feet wide over its first decade, eventually maturing into a narrow pyramidal tree. This vertical form, combined with its unique "sea-blue" texture, makes it a high-impact architectural piece for gardeners seeking year-round interest.

'Blue Rabbit' Larch requires full sun to maintain its intense blue coloration and sturdy form, though it can tolerate very light shade. It is ideal for tight spaces, narrow borders, or as a focal point in small urban gardens where a traditional spreading tree wouldn't fit. It thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and is notably resistant to Verticillium wilt; however, it does not handle drought well, so consistent moisture is key, especially during its establishment years.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
