GHOST DEADNETTLE
Lamium maculatum 'Ghost' is a striking, highly effective groundcover that brings a luminous, silver-toned brilliance to shaded areas of the landscape. Unlike typical Lamium varieties that feature a green margin with a silver center, 'Ghost' is almost entirely silvery-white, creating a bright, ethereal carpet that effectively illuminates dark, neglected corners of the garden. Its trailing, spreading habit is adorned with occasional snapdragon-like, mauve-pink flowers that provide a soft contrast to the intense foliage. It is prized for its ability to maintain its intense color without fading, providing a sophisticated, weed-suppressing mat that remains attractive from early spring well into the late autumn months.
For best results, Lamium 'Ghost' should be planted in a location with partial to full shade; in hotter climates, deep shade is essential to prevent the silver foliage from scorching under intense summer exposure. It requires consistently moist, well-draining, and rich soil to thrive, though it will tolerate drier conditions once fully established. To manage its growth and keep the patch looking fresh, it is recommended to shear the plants back by about a third after their primary flowering period; this encourages a flush of clean, new growth and prevents the center of the clump from becoming sparse. Hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8, it is a robust, low-maintenance solution for brightening up woodland borders or containers.
