Zone: 3ANNE GREENAWAY DEADNETTLE
Lamium maculatum 'Anne Greenaway' is more commonly known as Anne Greenaway Deadnettle. It is a vigorous, spreading perennial groundcover, highly valued for its luminous, multi-colored foliage that brightens shady garden spots. It features heart-shaped leaves with an attractive tricolor pattern: a central silver streak is framed by an inner band of medium green, all edged with a jagged margin of chartreuse or golden-yellow. The foliage is semi-evergreen to evergreen in milder climates and forms a low, dense mat, typically reaching only 6 to 9 inches in height but spreading up to 18 to 24 inches wide. In late spring to early summer, the plant is adorned with clusters of small, tubular mauve-pink to lilac-purple flowers, which may continue to bloom sporadically into the fall. It is a fantastic choice for a colorful, weed-smothering groundcover and is naturally resistant to deer and rabbits.
Anne Greenaway Deadnettle thrives in partial to full shade and prefers average, well-drained soil, though it tolerates a wide range of soil types and is notably good for dry shade once established. To ensure robust growth and prevent a leggy, open habit, 'Anne Greenaway' benefits from being cut back or sheared hard after the first main flush of flowers. This practice encourages a new wave of fresh foliage growth and can stimulate reblooming.
