Zone: 3SEA OF GOLD® JUNIPER
Juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Sea of Gold' is a standout evergreen shrub celebrated for its intense, long-lasting color and graceful, spreading habit. As an improved sport of the popular 'Saybrook Gold' Juniper, it holds its vibrant lemon-yellow hue much better throughout the seasons, even deepening into a rich gold during the winter months. It typically reaches a height of about 3 feet with a wider spread of 3 to 4 feet, forming a dense, feathery mound of scale-like foliage. Its lacy texture and horizontal branching make it an exceptional choice for mass plantings, erosion control on slopes, or as a bright contrast against darker green shrubs and purple-leaved perennials.
For optimal performance, 'Sea of Gold' Juniper should be planted in full sun; while it can tolerate light shade, its golden pigment is most brilliant when exposed to direct sunlight. 'Sea of Gold' is remarkably adaptable and thrives in a wide range of soil types, provided they are well-drained, as it does not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and stands up well to urban pollution and salt spray, making it a rugged choice for roadside plantings or coastal gardens. Minimal pruning is required to maintain its natural form, though it can be lightly trimmed in early spring to manage its spread or encourage even denser growth.
