BATIK INTERMEDIATE IRIS
Iris 'Batik' (classified as an Intermediate Bearded Iris, or IB) is a celebrated award-winner famed for its striking, highly irregular splash pattern reminiscent of the traditional Indonesian tie-dye technique. Reaching a compact height of 24 to 30 inches, it produces mid-spring blooms featuring deep royal-purple petals heavily spattered and streaked with erratic white lines and splotches, finished with a bright yellow-gold beard. Because it falls into the Intermediate classification, it flowers slightly earlier than Tall Bearded cultivars and sits on sturdier, wind-resistant stems that rarely require staking. Its sturdy, upright fan of sword-like green foliage and show-stopping bicolored blooms make it an outstanding choice for mid-border plantings, cutting gardens, or low-maintenance rock gardens.
Caring for 'Batik' is straightforward and relies primarily on ensuring sharp soil drainage and ample direct sunlight. Plant the rhizomes in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light per day) in fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil, setting the rhizomes so the top surface sits exposed to the sun to prevent moisture retention and soft rot. Water moderately during active spring growth and flowering, then taper off during the summer heat as the plant enters semi-dormancy. It is ideal for mid-border perennial plantings, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, and low-maintenance rock gardens where its vivid, spattered blooms can be appreciated up close.
