WINTRY SKY BEARDED IRIS

Iris germanica 'Wintry Sky' is an exquisite tall bearded iris selection celebrated for its dramatic, cool-toned color transitions and refined form. Broad, ruffled standards emerge in a pale, crystalline sky-blue that seamlessly softens into near-white at the centers, while the broad, flaring falls display a rich, deep violet-blue hue accented by bright yellow-to-white beards. Maturing to a stature of roughly 30 to 36 inches, 'Wintry Sky' produces sturdy, multi-branched flower scapes in mid-to-late spring, with individual blooms exhibiting clean color separation and heavy substance that holds up well against late spring rain. Its glaucous, sword-like fan foliage provides an attractive, architectural framework in the garden even after the bloom cycle concludes.

Cultivating 'Wintry Sky' requires a full-sun location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure strong stems and abundant flowering. The ideal spot is an elevated garden bed, rock garden slope, or sunny mixed border where the tops of the rhizomes can sit right at or slightly above the soil surface to catch the sun. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 9, 'Wintry Sky' Bearded Iris benefits from modest water during active spring growth, followed by drier conditions during summer dormancy.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: For Iris germanica types - Plant in well-draining, sunny soil. When planting, ensure the top of the rhizome is slightly exposed to the air; burying it too deep is a common cause of rot. Water regularly to establish, but avoid overwatering, as this plant prefers drier conditions than many other perennials. The single most critical cultural factor is sharp soil drainage; planting in heavy, waterlogged soils or burying the fleshy rhizomes too deeply will inevitably invite soft rot and iris borer infestations. Divide overcrowded clumps every three to four years in late summer and trim back foliage in autumn to keep the planting clean and vigorous.
